In February, came the addition of Rust’s Naval update, adding an entirely new deep-sea biome and tons of dangerous content to fill it. A piece of that content comes in the form of Scientist patrol boats that roam the deep sea, hunting players and guarding ghost ships. Follow along as we break down the functions and explain everything you need to know about Rust’s Scientist patrol boats.
Rust’s Scientist patrol boats can be found roaming all around Rust’s deep sea. Most frequently, they can be found hunting players in the open sea, but also frequently guard ghost ships as well as the Oil Rig once the locked crate is activated. Expect to find the boats roaming in groups of three with several scientists riding on each.

Rust’s Scientist patrols often ride in the new armored PT boat, accompanied by 2 escorting RHIBs, in groups of 12 to 18 Scientists. The Scientists will immediately aggro any player they come across following them until either they are dead or the player. Once cleared, each patrol boat contains a storage box with a small amount of loot as well as the standard loot from the Scientists. All Scientist-mounted patrol boats can be freely used and operated by the player.

The PT Boat is a sturdier but slower boat option and the signature choice of Rust’s Scientist patrol boats, with a total of 1000 HP and seven mountable seats. The boat features two turrets, including a fully-automatic machine gun, and a precise 50 caliber cannon. These turrets can each be refilled with 5.56 ammo. The PT boat consumes 18 Low grade fuel a minute, a slight increase from the RHIB’s 15 a minute.

With that, our Rust Scientist patrol boat guide comes to a close. If you enjoyed this blog, feel free to check out our blog covering the Gone Killing mission that requires you to kill 8 Scientists riding patrol boats. See you next time!
