After several delays and months of waiting, Rust’s Naval update has finally released to live servers. The update is one of the largest the game has received in years, bringing modular boats, a new deep-sea region full of secrets, a floating city monument, and new DLC content. Follow along as we cover the vast amount of content introduced with Rust’s Naval update.
The biggest and most anticipated feature added with Rust’s Naval update is the modular boat-building system. Boats are almost necessary to venture into and survive Rust’s newly added Deep Sea. By using a Boat Building Station, a Boat Building Plan, and boat-specific building blocks, you can build a custom boat however you wish. Boats can be fit with custom deployables we will cover later, as well as all of Rust’s classic deployables.

Several deployables are available to elevate your custom boat into a powerhouse. A steering wheel is the most important of these, which allows you to lock and steer your custom boat. Sails can be crafted to help push the boat forward, as well as an inefficient large engine, which can be powered with low-grade fuel. A large anchor can be added to drop and hold your position, a cannon fit with powerful cannonballs can be used to sink other ships, and either a small ramp or a tiny plank can be used to board other boats, force players off the edge, or to cross small gaps.
The Deep Sea is a high-risk high-reward region only accessible through powerful player-made, RHIB, or newly added PT boats. The area opens and closes intermittently and is first come first serve with no items ever respawning. Inside players can find tropical islands, Floating City monuments, ghost ships, and scientist-controlled boats with more being planned in future Rust updates.

Ghost ships are stationary vessels found across the vast deep sea. Inside each ghost ship is a wide variety of loot, ranging from the basic brown crate to locked crates and an equal number of scientists to protect it.

Floating Cities are the only sort of safe zone inside the Deep Sea. Rust’s Naval update brought four variants of the Floating City, each offering docks to secure your ship as well as several NPCs to trade and chat with. Several standard safe zone amenities, including recyclers, workbenches, research tables, a casino, and refineries, can be found. The monument also features a farming barge to harvest fresh crops for a scrap fee.

Across the Deep Sea, you’ll also come across several tropical islands abundant with resources. Each island contains lootable ruins fit with static cannons, crates, and even enemy scientists. The islands also feature a great number of nodes and trees that even drop newly added coconuts.

Scientists also patrol the Deep Sea in RHIBS and their own newly added PT Boat. The metal tank is slower than an RHIB and chugs more fuel, but it is sure to keep you safe from any enemies. Each PT Boat is fitted with a machine gun and a single, more precise gun. Each gun can be reloaded with 5.56 ammunition. The roaming vessels actively seek players and can also be found protecting Hacked Crates aboard ghost ships.

New scientist AI is being rolled out to oil rigs, ghost ships, and deep-sea islands this Rust update. They feature a new naval camo and square-fit visor. The new AI is made to discourage cheesing through sniping and funneling by forcing the AI to rely on sound rather than seeing the player through walls. Players can now bait the AI through noises, such as small peeks or sneak behind them for a sneak attack. The AI will no longer funnel into players and instead will play tactically by throwing smokes, flanking, rushing together, or waiting to ambush the player.

The Artist Pack DLC adds a ton of items in the Naval update to help Rust’s diverse playerbase express themselves in whichever way they wish. A paintball gun and multi-colored overalls bring a fun, new way to paint and play. Players can suit up to fight each other, doing negligible damage, or they can hang up reactive targets and canvases to practice their aim. Ornate, light-up, and shutter frames as well as frameless canvases and easels all bring new ways to present your art with the Artist Pack DLC, with reward medal sprays being added to rate players’ artwork. Finally, even a paintable window is available for players as a skin for the Strengthened Glass Window.
That covers everything added with Rust’s long-awaited Naval update. After waiting an entire three months for the massive update to release, players can finally dive into what the developers have been cooking up. Look forward to additional coverage of this update on our blog. See you next time!
