Rust Workbench Upgrades: Every Upgrade and How to Get Them

With Rust’s new Upgrade Hard Raid Harder update, workbenches received a new addition in the form of a workbench upgrade system. A total of 9 workbench upgrades were added, with each offering unique benefits to the deployable. Follow along as we cover every upgrade and what they do.

Where to Find Rust Workbench Upgrades

Workbench upgrades have very limited spawns, appearing rarely inside of different tiered loot pools depending on the power of the upgrade. This rarity is expected due to how powerful some of the upgrades can be.

Prototype Workbench Upgrade

The prototype workbench lets you learn any item in the workbench’s tech tree, regardless of your current progress. This comes at a cost, with each research costing double the scrap and having a 25% chance of failure. The upgrade is helpful for fast-forwarding progression when you are tight on scrap. It can only be found inside military crates.

Range Workbench Upgrade

Rust’s range workbench upgrade doubles the crafting radius of your workbench. This expands the range by about a foundation’s distance in each direction. The range workbench upgrade can be found inside the standard Crate.

Recycle Bin Workbench Upgrade

The recycle bin workbench upgrade gives a chance to refund up to 10% of a recipe’s ingredients back after crafting an item. The recycle bin triggers about 50% of the time, giving a small amount of resources back. The upgrade can be found inside the standard Crate.

Accelerated Workbench Upgrade

The accelerated workbench upgrade increases your crafting speed while crafting in large batches by 25% for each item completed in the batch. This can make crafting large amounts of simple resources, such as gunpowder, go by much faster. It can only be found inside Elite or Locked crates.

Comfort Workbench Upgrade

Rust’s comfort workbench upgrade provides 100% comfort to any players standing in the range of the workbench. It is helpful for passively regenerating health while crafting large amounts of items. The range workbench upgrade does not extend the radius of the comfort zone. The upgrade is found inside standard Crates.

Salvage Workbench Upgrade

The salvage workbench upgrade reduces the Scrap research cost of every item on the tech tree by 20%. This can save you large amounts of scrap, especially if you are in a large group that plans on researching the same items multiple times. The workbench upgrade is found in Locked Crates and rarely inside of Elite Crates.

Defensive Workbench Upgrade

Rust’s defensive workbench upgrade adds a guaranteed chance for eligible clothing items to roll an armor insert slot when crafted. This makes it much easier to obtain armor insert slots without the use of Crafting Quality Tea. The upgrade can be found in standard Crates.

Efficiency Workbench Upgrade

The efficiency workbench upgrade grants a 10% chance to create a bonus item when crafting in large batches. The upgrade applies to any items that can be crafted in batches of more than one, excluding explosives and raid materials. The efficiency upgrade can be found inside Military Crates.

Reinforced Workbench Upgrade

The reinforced workbench upgrade increases the health of your workbench by 150% while also granting resistance to explosives. The upgrade allows you to turn your workbench into a full-blown raid defense when necessary. It can be found inside Military Crates.
