A new quality-of-life feature was brought to the workbench tech tree with Rust’s recent Spring Clean update. The new feature allows players to unlock multiple items in the tech tree at once, assuming they have the proper scrap. Follow along as we teach you about the tech tree and the new multi-unlocking feature.
The tech tree is the main way to access new blueprints inside of Rust. Every workbench has an interactable tech tree based on the tier and type of workbench. Inside each tech tree is a set of blueprints that must be unlocked in a specific order using Scrap. The tree is not the only way to learn blueprints, however, as items can also be researched at a research table.

The tech tree can be accessed by interacting with any workbench. Depending on the level of your workbench, you can access lower-level tech trees using the HUD options in the top-left. For learning electrical items, a special workbench known as the engineering workbench is required to access an exclusive engineering tech tree.

The new multi-unlocking feature allows you to instantly learn a chain of items on any tech tree. Simply select the item you wish to unlock, and select the “Unlock Path” option to instantly research the entire path of blueprints down to that item. The scrap cost when multi-unlocking is the same, and the total scrap cost to multi-unlock is indicated next to the unlock button. The feature serves to reduce the time it takes to research a large number of items on the tech tree.
