Rust’s April monthly update has finally been released, with the Spring Clean update introducing a brand new way to generate electricity. The new water wheel uses kinetic energy to generate power at high rates, offering a new alternative for power generation. There are several facets to effectively using the new water wheel, so follow along as we cover everything you need to know about this item.
The easiest way to obtain Rust’s water wheel is by crafting it. The tier 1 item can be unlocked through the tech tree by using a standard or engineering workbench. If found or traded for, the water wheel can be researched using 60 Scrap at a research table. The water wheel can currently not be found inside loot pools.

There are two ways to use Rust’s water wheel. If placed inside a flowing source of water, the wheel will spin automatically, generating up to 60 power. The wheel can also be placed on a foundation, allowing players to run on the wheel. The amount of power generated will slowly climb to 60 as the player continues to run. An auto-run key bind can be used, allowing players to generate power while AFK, players can also be kidnapped using a prisoner hood and handcuffs and be forced to generate power.

At a standard recycler, the water wheel will recycle 300 wood and a gear with a 20% chance of generating an extra gear and a 60% chance of generating a piece of sheet metal. If recycled at a safe zone recycler, the wheel will grant 200 wood with an 80% chance of generating a gear and a 20% chance of generating a piece of sheet metal.

That covers everything you need to know about Rust’s new water wheel. With several ways to use this item, enjoy powering your base using the flow of the river, or by kidnapping victims and putting them to work. Feel free to test the item and see how it compares to other electricity generators, such as the Wind Turbine or Solar Panel. See you next time!
