Rust Lighting Changes Overview

Rust’s lighting system received a massive rework in the June “Nerfed, Buffed, Balanced?” update. The new system causes indoor areas to no longer be fully lit from an outdoor perspective, while outdoor areas are no longer dimmed when viewed from indoor areas. The quality of life changes are designed to create and ensure a well-lit environment after many complaints from players over the years. Without further ado, let’s get into these Rust lighting changes.

Nerfed, Buffed, Balance Update Overview

Rust’s Lighting Issues

Previously, when viewing areas in Rust, the lighting was determined based on where the player stood. For example, if standing in a dark tunnel and looking outside, no matter the distance to the entryway, the ground would remain dark and affected by the player’s current environment. This system caused many unfair fights between players in well-lit and darkened areas. Players shooting out would be disadvantaged as they wouldn’t be able to properly see outside, while players shooting in would have a great view into an otherwise pitch black area.

Rust’s Lighting Changes

With the introduction of June’s “Nerfed, Buffed, Balanced?” update, the lighting system has received some changes to fix the issues causing these unfair battles. A spatially aware system has been introduced to help bring some benefits to Rust’s lighting. Now, the player’s location isn’t as impactful when determining the lighting of the areas around them as much as it is the light source. This fixes the unfair issues lighting caused when peeking in versus out of an angle.
