The long-standing roof stabilization bug that allowed for the creation of roof bunkers and certain external TC designs has finally been patched with Rust’s “Friends with Benefits” July update. In this article, we will cover why it was patched, what the change means, and why the community has been so outraged over it.
The roof stabilization bug was an issue with Rust’s building mechanic that caused roof tiles to randomly destroy themselves. The roof tiles would have the proper stability to be placed, however, upon placement of certain building tiles or server restarts, the roof tiles would destroy themselves and seemingly de-spawn. Furthermore, in certain scenarios, roof tiles could not be placed despite having proper stability. The bug allowed for specific bunker and external TC designs that abused the feature by using the roof as a defensive wall and destroying it with specific tiles when necessary.

Rust’s roof stabilization bug was patched due to an influx of pyramid-designed bases since the Jungle Update back in May. These pyramid bases were randomly missing roofs upon server restarts due to the bug, confusing the players building them, and forcing the developers to change it.
Following community outbursts, the developers released a statement regarding the bug, adding, “We didn’t break all bunkers in the game nor plan to, we fixed stability calculations primarily affecting stability with roofs, which caused a single type of bunker to break.” Overall, the change can be summed up as something the community didn’t want, but it had to happen.

While the polarizing change may be upsetting for many, it is important to remain respectful of the developer’s changes and to provide feedback formally.
