Whether or not it’s the first thing you look at, or if you even knew it existed, every Steam account has a Steam Level. It can be thought that the more you do on Steam or use the client, the more XP you earn and the higher your level becomes. That can be true to some extent, but there are lots of cases where even Steam accounts that have been around for 10-15 years or more have a lower Steam level than a relatively newer account. This is due to the specific criteria for gaining experience and subsequently leveling up your Steam profile.

How To Earn Steam Account XP

You can earn experience on your Steam account through a number of ways: purchasing games, earning badges, crafting badges, and upgrading badges. While purchasing games sounds expensive, the process to earn, craft, or upgrade badges doesn’t have to be, making it a good alternative to buying a load of games.

What Are Steam Badges and How Do You Craft Them?

Badges are a kind of cosmetic on Steam that you can display on your profile. These can be obtained in two ways: through participating in a limited-time event (thus creating event badges) or exchanging a full set of game-specific trading cards into a badge.

You obtain trading cards upon buying games, with each eligible game having a number of trading cards required to complete a full set. Exchanging a full set will earn you a badge that corresponds to that specific game, and you can complete this multiple times for the same game to earn XP until you hit the highest badge level.

Trading cards are widely available on the Steam marketplace, but admittedly, some of them are a lot more expensive than others. In this case, you can trade with other users (such as your friends) who have the trading cards you need in order to complete the set.

Badges obtained through participating in limited-time events are automatically awarded to your profile when the event is finished. Participating during seasonal sales in the Steam store will earn you a badge, while even more basic actions, such as simply checking out your yearly Steam Replay, will result in the same thing.
