CS2 Fundamentals: How to Master CS2 Retakes

If the act of entering a site with the goal of being the first ones there and establishing complete control is called a take, then what’s it called when you’re responding to the opponent team’s dominance over said site? You guessed it: it’s called a retake.

Retakes in Counter-Strike 2 are exactly how they sound — an attempt to take over control of a site that you may or may not have held in the first place from the opponents. As CTs, retakes happen when the attacking side has gotten a planted bomb down. T players are those who “take” sites, while CTs, who lost control of the site in the first place, “retake” them.

In CS2, CTs almost always have superior access to both bomb sites and sometimes even spawn directly on the planting area. This is why, when either site is lost, their act of winning it back is seen as a retake.

Understanding Counter-Terrorist Retakes in Counter-Strike 2

Retakes happen in CS2 as a result of the Terrorists overwhelming a site completely and successfully planting the bomb, setting up a limited amount of time for the CTs to still secure the round. Retakes are also typically more challenging since they usually happen when a lot of utility has already been expended, and a number of players on both sides have been killed.

How to Improve CS2 Retakes

In October 2025, Valve officially brought back the Retakes game mode as part of the Re-Retakes update. This provides you with a whole lot of situations as both the Ts and CTs on both defending from and succeeding on a retake attempt. The game mode comes with loadout cards, which determine what you have for that round, and encourages you to choose resources wisely.

How to Improve CS2 Retakes

If the official Retakes game mode is not your cup of tea, then there are always retakes servers hosted by the community that provide the exact same thing. You either attack or defend a site with limited flashes, grenades, and defuse time to hone your skills for the real thing.
