What is TrueView in CS2 Demo Playback?

Far from the massive update that changed the global skin economy, Valve’s most recent patch notes for the game introduce a new concept to CS2, TrueView Demo Playback. As the name suggests, this update is specifically for watching match replays (or demos) as an improvement to how they used to appear on your screen.

Explaining TrueView Demo Playback

Essentially, TrueView enhances the quality of the replay in terms of hit registration, improving what you see when watching replays by more than just one or two frames. In the past, demo playback showed a very delayed response (especially with things like shots and thrown utility) as compared to what you remember happening in the game.

Now, even in very slow-motion playback, TrueView helps the demo look as accurate to what originally happened as possible. No more shots connecting after the crosshair has already missed the player’s frame completely, only accurate shots from now on.

Valve explained that TrueView demo playback works by running the player’s client-side prediction to ensure precise timings, since before the demo system made use of server-side predictions.

TrueView is not perfect, however, as Valve has mentioned a few caveats to the new update. TrueView will work best for demos recorded starting the day it was implemented as an update, and will be disabled by default for older demos (needs to be activated).

There will also still be some differences from what was seen during the game to what TrueView will provide; however, it’s still significantly better than reviewing a demo without it. Finally, certain effects such as muzzle flash, blood splatter, and the like will still have a few frames of delay when viewed through a demo.

Who Does TrueView Benefit?

TrueView really benefits everyone, since this is a quality-of-life upgrade to the game for a problem that has been noticed a lot in recent years. But this especially benefits those who want to clip their game recordings, highlights, and make fragmovies, as the playback is now a whole lot better than it used to be.
