Picture this: it’s October 2025, you hop off the PC after a nice day of playing Counter-Strike with a few flashy skins bought with hard-earned money. You go to sleep in peace, wake up from your slumber, and all of a sudden it’s 2008. So what actually happened overnight?
On October 23, Valve released the Re-Retakes Update. Their social media post mainly featured the return of a beloved game mode; however, one look at the blog post highlighted something way different: you can trade up five Covert-rarity weapons to knives and gloves.

This was huge news at first, but for a good hour or so, whatever you received from a trade-up wasn’t marketable or tradable. It didn’t take long for this to just be revealed as a glitch, though, and soon the realization kicked in — you can now trade in five low-valued Covert skins for a KNIFE of all things.

This is where the panic kicked in for people who were holding knives and gloves, along with those eager to cash in on the opportunity of a lifetime. The most high-tier knives were being sold at 50-70% of their listed price before the update dropped, while low-end Coverts like a Battle Scarred P90 Asiimov jumped up over 1000% in value.

So how does this affect CS2’s market cap? Well, the market cap is essentially the combination of all the values of every skin in existence. Since knives and gloves are some of the most desired cosmetic items, arguably across any game title, their steep drop in price greatly affected the economy of the game as we know it.

According to information provided by Pricempire, CS2’s market cap went from around $6 billion to close to $4 billion in less than 24 hours. A drop of around 30% is the biggest crash we’ve seen in recent history, and while the panic has lessened over the last few hours (perhaps replaced by acceptance of losses), it doesn’t look like the price concern will end anytime soon.
The market will eventually correct itself from this, but without any further action from Valve, only time can tell how much larger an impact the most recent update will have on the world of CS2 skins.
