In Rust’s August Harder Core update, the game received an entire atmospheric revamp, adding volumetric clouds, volumetric fog, and even self-shadowing foliage. These changes aim to prepare the game for a wider variety of dynamic weather in the future. Prepare as we cover everything new in Rust’s Atmospheric Revamp.

The volumetric clouds are a new feature added as an experimental option to replace Rust’s old 2D clouds. The volumetric clouds are highly dynamic, moving through the sky and morphing shapes depending on the weather. The new 3D clouds can even interact naturally with light sources.

The volumetric fog brings enhanced visuals to Rust’s atmosphere for all players through much more advanced fogging techniques. Now each biome will have its own biome-localized fog. You will see this fog as an outsider looking in, causing each biome to look more natural from a distance. Fog will also now interact with the light and shadows, creating sunsets and natural god rays.

Finally, all foliage, such as trees and bushes, outside of the shadow range will have directional self-shadowing. Players can expect the change to improve distant visuals of foliage and to reduce the number of visual issues when it comes to glowing trees.
