In the recently released August “Harder Core” update, Rust’s Hardcore Mode received a large refresh, improving on many problems the mode had, along with adding new features to make the game mode more unique. A revamped fog of war system, a new compass, and even crafting changes just scratch the surface of all the changes made to the newly refreshed hardcore mode.
Some of the biggest changes made to Rust’s hardcore mode were map changes. Most importantly, a new fog of war feature has been added, requiring you to explore and uncover the map manually. Furthermore, the player indicator, along with the compass, has been removed from the map entirely, making navigation harder.

A new compass item was added to give players a solution to their newfound navigation problems. The compass, when crafted, allows you to view your player indicator on the map and also grants you the compass indicator at the top of the screen.

Respawns are yet another feature being made hardcore for Rust’s new game mode. Say goodbye to the old 5-minute sleeping bag cooldowns, as they have been increased to 15 minutes for the mode. Furthermore, bed timers have been increased to 10 minutes, forcing the player to wisely choose their engagements.

Another massive change being made to Rust’s hardcore mode is the crafting changes. These changes remove guns from the tech tree entirely, forcing you to scavenge and find them. Ammo crafting has also received changes by having its recipe costs increased by 5x. While guns can still be repaired and reused, these changes will make them much harder to come across.

Finally, upkeep costs have received a simple yet drastic change in Rust’s hardcore mode, with the developers doubling the costs across the board. The idea behind the change was to force players to use tight and efficient base designs, requiring them to think before just building.

That’s all of the changes made to Rust’s hardcore mode. The developers were sure to listen to player feedback when making these changes and tweaks in hopes of helping the slowly dying mode make a comeback.
