The recent August “Harder-core” update introduced a brand new hardcore mode to the game, designed to give players an extra challenge. With Rust’s hardcore mode came a brand new exclusive item known as the Compass. When crafted, the compass will allow you to access certain map features and give the player a better idea of their location. Follow along as we teach how to take advantage of this brand-new item.
Check out the rest of the Harder Core update in our update guide:
The compass is a default blueprint for all players. It can be crafted for the measly cost of 75 metal fragments and 30 seconds of your time. The rusty item does not require a workbench to craft, meaning that once the proper materials are obtained, the tool can be yours.

Once you’ve crafted the compass, simply equip it to your belt to begin using the item. The classic Rust compass UI will begin to show at the top of the screen, allowing you to better communicate with your teammates.

Furthermore, your player location will be visible on the map; however, without the direction indicator. The item can also be crafted outside of the hardcore mode; however, it serves little purpose outside of roleplay reasons.
That’s everything you need to know about Rust’s new hardcore compass item. Hopefully, with this new item, navigation will be much more interesting for players enjoying the hardcore mode. If you enjoyed this article, be sure to check out our rundown of the brand new hardcore mode. See you next time!
