In August’s “Harder Core” update, the Rust Metal Detector received a large rework, buffing the tool’s potential and giving it a new feature entirely. The Metal Detector has long been regarded as a mostly useless item with a limited loot pool of mid-tier treasures. The tool always became obsolete once players reached tier 2 weaponry, but with the new rework, the item’s versatility stretches far beyond its former boundaries. Get ready as we cover how to obtain the Metal Detector and use its brand-new recovery feature.
Check out the rest of the Harder Core update in our update guide:
Rust’s Metal Detector is a tier 1 workbench item that can be crafted for 2 Rope, 200 Metal Fragments, and 5 High Quality Metal. The item can also be found in many loot pools, including sunken, wagon, and normal crates, all scientist bodies, and even tunnel dwellers. The blueprint can be obtained through the Engineering Workbench or researched for 75 scrap.

With the Metal Detector’s new feature, despawned items inside of Rust now have a chance to become buried treasure, which you can uncover. Simply head to a spot where you believe items have despawned, whether it’s a finished raid or the remains of a large fight.

Then use the Metal Detector as you normally would to have a chance to uncover despawned weapons or even backpacks full of goodies. Some weapons are filtered, so don’t expect to dig up an M249, but just know worthy treasure awaits.

With the entirety of Rust’s Metal Detector rework covered, prepare to channel your inner treasure hunter and find the left behind belongings of your teammates and enemies.
