Rust Boomerang Overview
Rust recently released the new Jungle update, adding tons of new features, including the boomerang. The Rust boomerang is an alternative to the spear that acts as a hybrid between a ranged and melee weapon. The new low-tier weapon fits perfectly into the jungle biome, having a history of being used by Aboriginal people for warfare and hunting. Get ready as we show you the ins and outs of this new primitive weapon.
How to Obtain The Boomerang
The boomerang will be one of the first weapons you get your hands on in Rust, being a default blueprint and not requiring a workbench. The spear equivalent has the same recipe, requiring only 300 wood to craft despite its fully metal design.
How to Use The Boomerang
Once crafted, the boomerang can be used as a melee weapon and as a throwable. A left-click swing will do 25 damage per hit, attacking slightly faster than the slow spear, but at a much lower range. The right-click attack allows you to throw the boomerang, which then travels in a fixed arc and automatically returns to the player unless a target or the ground is hit. If you’re moving while the boomerang comes back towards you, you will fail to catch it and must pick it back up. The boomerang takes a lot of effort to learn if you want any chance of hitting your enemies. Aiming the boomerang and mastering its fixed arc allows you to easily throw it around walls, corners, rocks, or other obstacles, ambushing your opponent and gaining the advantage in a fight.
When to Use The Boomerang
The boomerang’s melee capabilities fall quite short compared to its competitors, meaning close-range fights won’t be the way to go. If you are forced into a melee encounter, it is important to go for headshots, dealing double the damage, and to run making distance, allowing you to reapproach the fight on your own terms. A ranged approach by lurking in either bushes or the new jungle biome vine trees will be your best chance to find an enemy and time the perfect attack. You can also get your team to create a distraction allowing you to jump a foe the moment they least expect it.

Overall, while not the most powerful, Rust’s boomerang brings a fresh take to the game, acting as the first melee weapon that can return to you when thrown. While it may not be handy for eco raiding bases or breaking objects after a recent nerf, its purpose as a stealthy throwable remains prominent. Hopefully, we begin to watch more people experiment with items, learning new techniques and strategies to boost the boomerangs’ effectiveness.
