How To Get a Refund For a Steam Game Key

There are countless games on Steam that require the purchase of a game key, which essentially gives you the right to own and play a copy of that game. Sometimes, you buy a game and it instantly becomes one of your favorites that you play nonstop. At other times, however, it falls flat instantly, and you wish you had spent your money elsewhere. Whether it’s a game that fails to live up to the hype or simply has no appeal to you, don’t worry – there’s always a way to submit a refund request for it.

Steam Refund Policy and Requirements

Requesting a refund for a title purchased in the Steam store is not as difficult as you might think. Before anything else though, ensure that the game you are asking a refund for satisfies all the criteria for a successful request. There is a two-hour playtime limit, which means that you must have less than two hours of total game time before you initiate the request.

Second, the refund policy also states that you must ask for a refund within 14 days of purchase. Titles purchased prior to their release date will only start the 14-day count upon the launch day, which means even if you pre-ordered a game months in advance, you can still successfully request a refund.

Typically, refund requests that meet both conditions will be processed without any issues, and the funds will be released to either your Steam wallet or the original payment method, whichever you choose.

How To Request a Steam Refund

With that out of the way, let’s get to the main refund process:

Navigate to Steam Support at help.steampowered.com, then enter your login details.
From there, click on “Purchases,” then locate the “I need help with a previous purchase or shipping” section and select the game title for which you want a refund.
Under “What issue are you having with this purchase?”, select “I would like a refund” then “I’d like to request a refund”.
Finally, fill out the form on the last page and submit your request. Once the refund request has been processed, Steam will issue a refund to your preferred wallet.
