The main game mode of Counter-Strike has always been, and most likely will always be, Bomb Defusal, which is used in all major online matchmaking lobbies and in competitive play. Even with the Bomb Defusal scenario’s overwhelming popularity, there is still demand for all of CS2’s different game modes. One of them is the Hostage Rescue scenario.
The Hostage Rescue mode in Counter-Strike is a variation of the classic game experience. It takes place on Hostage Rescue maps, which are different from the usual Premier/Competitive maps like Mirage or Dust 2. The goal of the Hostage mode is to either defend multiple hostages or secure and bring them to the designated hostage rescue zones, depending on which side you’re playing on.

While there isn’t an option to play Hostage Rescue in Premier matchmaking, it is possible to play it in Competitive and earn ranks. The only two Hostage maps available in the game right now are Italy and Office.
The Terrorists’ job in each round is to ‘defend’ the hostage, ensuring that the CTs are unable to rescue even one of them. There will be two different hostage positions, and if the Counter-Terrorists are able to rescue at least one, then the round is officially over.

Map control is key to victory in this game mode. It isn’t advisable to prioritize only one area as not all the hostages need to be rescued. The most effective basic strategy for the Hostage Rescue scenario is to have two players guarding both, with one player as a rotator scouting the map and running over to whichever side needs more help.
This really only applies to the CTs once someone has started to rescue hostages. The player carrying the hostage will have a significant movement speed debuff, but an extra minute will be added to the round clock.

Hostages in CS2 do not take damage and are invincible, but hitting one will cause a deduction to your economy. If even one hostage has been picked up by the CTs, the rest of the CT team should prioritize getting close to the hostage carrier and fend off Ts.
More often than not, the CTs can only reach the hostage rescue zone if they outnumber the enemy team. The player carrying the hostage should never be alone unless they are the only one alive; if that’s the case, they must drop the hostage temporarily and prioritize eliminating opponents.
