CS2 Economy: When Should You Save?

In CS2, saving is a way of preserving your team’s in-game economy to ensure that there is enough money for the next round or future rounds that have better chances of success. Saving is sometimes determined before a round even begins, and other times it is called in the middle of the round when the game isn’t going as planned.

Saving sounds easy enough since it’s the act of not spending any more money or preserving what assets your team has. Still, not everything prompts a save round — so when should you really save in CS2?

Save Money Against A Full Buy Round

If your team’s economy doesn’t look the greatest, and you anticipate that the opposing team’s economy is healthy enough for a full buy round, then it’s probably best to go for a full eco round yourself. Take the quick L and make up for it with superior weapons one round later.

Save If You Really Need To Earn Money

There are situations that really speak for themselves. For example, if all your money combined can only afford, say, a Desert Eagle and a Molotov, then you’re better off treating the next two minutes as a pistol round and preserving everything you have. There’s little to no reason to force buy into a situation where you can die before making any sort of impact, and even further harming your individual economy.

Save If You’re Close To A Full Buy Round

If you’re close to a full buy round, that means you can typically afford SMGs and armor or rifles without extra armor or utility items, but it also means that you’re at least one loss bonus away from a full buy yourself. This is typically viewed on a case-by-case basis, so it’s important to weigh each situation as it comes.

Save When The Round Is Lost

Unlike the first three scenarios, this type of saving comes during the middle of a round. Say you bought an AWP, but your entire team has already fallen, and it’s a 1v3 situation, there’s far too much risk to keep going and fight that unless you’re Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut. Find a decent hiding spot, save the AWP, avoid dying at all costs, and bring the weapon to the following round, where everything is reset.
