Build The Best CS2 Team: Dominate with an Impactful AWPer

When teams are at a stalemate, the difference between winning and losing often boils down to the quality of the AWPer on either side. A skilled AWPer can change the landscape of the entire game from a single round, wielding their sniper rifle of choice, as professional players have demonstrated many times before.

Some of the most achieved and best CS2 teams of all time owe much of their success to having a dominant and impactful AWPer. Some of the best players of all time, such as Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev, Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut, and Kenny “kennyS” Schrub, are renowned for their proficiency with the AWP.

When playing in online matchmaking or “pugs” as often referred to, it might become challenging to find a designated AWPer who can consistently control key areas and achieve success, fulfilling one of the core roles of any CS team. Your team’s AWPer should be proficient with not only the AWP, but also the SSG and other single-shot weapons such as the Desert Eagle. The role of the AWPer is not just to take singular kills throughout the game; a good sniper should make kills that allow other roles, such as entry fraggers, to take over a site or location.

An AWPer is generally expected to be one of the best aimers on the team. Since the AWP is an expensive weapon to purchase and only returns a small yield per kill, it is of utmost importance to the team’s economy that their sniper survives for a long time while getting a solid return. While the central role of the AWPer is to stop enemy movements, especially towards either bomb site, there have been some occasions when they are also responsible for calling the shots.

Possible Secondary Role: In-Game Leader

Famous AWPers who have also taken up the secondary role of being the in-game leader (IGL) of a team include Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo and Casper “cadiaN” Møller. Having one person pick up two unique responsibilities of a team will no doubt be a considerable asset, though it is a challenging one, especially in randomly created lineups through online matchmaking. But it is possible, and any player who can step up to fulfill both roles would be a crucial step towards victory.
