The term “pick” isn’t uncommon in a game of Counter-Strike, but what does “playing for picks” truly mean? In Counter-Strike, a pick is a synonym for the word “kill” that’s used in situations wherein it’s a one-off instance that happened as a result of a successful lurk, rotate, or anything in between that did not immediately get followed up by a massive firefight. Getting picks is also a way to collect information, as the opposing team’s setup is always something that you can create new strategies around.

Playing for picks is a strategy that’s usually called when the team is at a disadvantage. Either the economy isn’t looking so good, the round has gone south, or basically nothing has been working. Getting a pick around an area of the map is a solid foundation for getting back on track.

Most players who play for picks will usually push up once they secure a kill on an enemy. The rest of the team will then follow them towards said area, usually regardless of weapons and relying more on a numbers advantage.
During a full eco round, the goal shifts away from completely eliminating the enemy team to simply getting as much money to the next round as possible. Kills with weaker weapons, such as pistols, give out more cash, making picks the target for almost everyone in that case.

A team that plays for picks will usually end up losing the round, but even scoring two or three kills is considered a success. Its effectiveness is entirely dependent on how much the other team’s economy was disrupted, and in this case, there’s nothing better than making them reset from the buy menu.
If you’re playing for picks, you typically want encounters to be as easy as possible. There’s no reason to run around creating so much noise just to inevitably die without contributing if slow movement and calculated timing would result in even a single kill.

Playing for picks absolutely means go for a kill, but you should still choose your battles. You might fail by trying to get a pick on someone in a bomb site, but there’s a significantly higher chance of success by being at the right place and right time, even in a part of the map no one would suspect.
