Not only is this arguably one of the greatest and most popular professional matches ever played on Inferno, it’s not such a wild claim to say that the final map of the 2018 ELEAGUE Major Boston Grand Final is one of the greatest Counter-Strike matches of all time.

The championship-deciding map was played in front of a passionate American crowd, with NA’s greatest hope in Cloud9 facing off against the superteam of FaZe Clan. How has this particular match stood against the test of time, even with the current generation of players and fans that weren’t around to see it happen live? Let’s relive what took place that day.

FaZe Clan 15-11 Cloud9

The first half of Cloud9 vs FaZe Clan on Inferno was pretty evenly split, going 8-7 in favor of the international superteam. But it was the second half, particularly the last eight rounds of regulation, and the subsequent double-OT period that fans all around the world have never forgotten and will not soon forget.

FaZe Clan were on the brink of their first-ever Major championship as an organization with the score reading 14-9 in their favor, and just three rounds later, they were on championship point at 15-11. Staring down pretty much certain heartbreak, Cloud9 denied FaZe Clan four supposedly title-clinching rounds to send the final map of the final match of the Boston Major into overtime.

The 30th round of regulation included a now-iconic play and matching caster call, which is pretty much the defining moment not just of that Major, but possibly of one Jake “Stewie2k” Yip’s career. If, somehow, you don’t know what this play is, prepare to be enlightened:

Stewie2k’s 1v3 B Site hold in the 30th round of Inferno stands as one of the most iconic and memorable plays ever, especially when you consider the sheer importance of what he accomplished that round against a FaZe Clan trio that was seemingly on their way to get the plant and secure the trophy.

Cloud9 Make It Work

The first overtime period was evenly split as both Cloud9 and FaZe Clan won three rounds apiece as the Counter-Terrorists, including a crucial 1v2 clutch from Ladislav “GuardiaN” Kovács to secure that a second overtime period would be needed.

Fast-forward a couple rounds, and Cloud9 would be on championship point in overtime again, with GuardiaN as the disadvantaged player in yet another 1v2 situation. Lightning wouldn’t strike twice for FaZe Clan, however, as Tyler “Skadoodle” Latham dealt the finishing blow to give Cloud9 the ELEAGUE Major Boston crown.

And so began the running joke that not only fans of Cloud9, their players, or the NA faithful are aware of, but pretty much everyone in the Counter-Strike community.

That day will forever be known as the day FaZe ultimately choked a 15-11 lead in the CS:GO Boston Major Final on the final map, Inferno, giving C9 and NA their first Major in history.
