In the early years of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Inferno was widely known as nothing more than a map which is won through pure technical ability. Made famous by the likes of Adam “friberg” Friberg, Inferno has always been considered one of the most difficult maps in the entire franchise.
An inexperienced or old-fashioned player might think that utility usage and strategic depth on Inferno is limited to a Molotov towards Car and one smoke to cover off CT Spawn on B Site, but the game has evolved into so much more. Teams such as Astralis made the concept of flawless utility execution the norm, especially on a map such as Inferno.
The T Side players have lots of ways to get into A Site thanks to a variety of passageways that consist of Mid, Second Mid, and Apartments. Walking up is definitely one thing; however, surviving against readily-positioned CT players is another.

There are so many angles that attacking players need to check and/or cover off when pushing up A Site since not only is it a massive area, but there are also lots of potential hiding spots for the Counter-Terrorist players.
Moto/Library is a common spot that is focused on when either clearing or blocking off through utility, as it’s a place where CTs can either hide or rotate from B. Any player going up Stairs in Apartments has to account for the possibility of a defender holding the angle from Balcony or Boiler, which are two choke points that cannot possibly be viewed at the same time.

Finally, getting through Top Mid always comes down to the choice of which side to block off — either the left or the right. Smoking the left side of Top Mid denies vision to those stationed around Arch or Long Corner, while blocking off the right side protects the Ts pushing upward from those hiding anywhere around A Short.

Quite possibly the most famous piece of Inferno utility ever comes from a clip taken from the IEM Chicago 2018 semifinal between Astralis and Fnatic. Down 14-15 on Inferno with a round loss meaning defeat in the series altogether, Lukas “gla1ve” Rossander’s team pulled off an incredible execute that still finds its way into highlight reels to this day.
Three molotovs and two smokes were all it took to completely eliminate any threat on B Site and secure overtime at 15-15. Astralis targeted Dark, 1st Oranges, and New Box/Stewie with molotovs that landed directly on the Fnatic players and two follow-up smokes that instantly covered off Coffin and CT Spawn.
This is the prime example of a flawless execution and one that Astralis made famous, which ultimately led to a whole different way to tackle Inferno’s B Site. They knew what the most common spots on this certain part of the map were and targeted them to the point where not a single angle was safe from simple utility lineups.
Just alike the CTs, T players on Inferno play mid-round rotations heavily through Mid or Second Mid. By default, the areas surrounding Mid favor the attacking side due to the position of their Spawn. A crucial thing that must be taken into consideration, however, is the CT players’ ability to push up and extend past either bomb site to cut off rotations before they even happen.
