Rust’s Silencer Faces Major Changes

Recent commits from the Rust developers have given us a preview of significant upcoming changes to Rust’s silencer. The changes are set to readjust the power balance of silencers in the early game by making the current silencer harder to find and adding new tier 1 and tier 2 silencers to take its place. Let’s dive deep as we explore all the information we know about Rust’s new silencers.

Rust Military Silencer Changes

The first change being made to readjust the power balance is removing the current silencer from workbenches and the tech tree. This makes them blocked from being obtained and non-craftable outside of looting. The change aims to make the military silencer a rarer and sought-after item, in turn making it much less frequently used inside of PVP and other actions. The military silencer will still carry its same stats and suppress the sound of gunfire just as much.

New Soda Can Silencer

A new silencer mod is being added to the tier 1 workbench. The soda can silencer requires 20 scrap to research and 40 metal fragments to craft. It still serves the same purpose as a standard silencer, muting your shots and removing visible muzzle flash, allowing you to get an advantage on the enemy.

The tier 1 silencer has the downside of reduced velocity and damage, lowering each by 35% and 30% respectively. The silencer also features extremely low durability, only lasting around 12 assault rifle shots.

New Oil Filter Silencer

A tier 2 variant of the Rust silencer mod is also being added as an oil filter. The oil filter silencer also requires 20 scrap to research but 10 high-quality metals to craft.

Its benefits are slightly improved compared to the soda can, only nerfing velocity and damage by 30% each. The oil filter silencer is slightly more durable than its Tier 1 competitor, surviving 48 shots from a weapon.

That’s all for the changes being made to Rust silencers. It is important to note that you can still repair these silencers despite the changes.
