Is A Half Buy Ever Worth It in CS2?

No one’s ever won a game of Counter-Strike without getting something from the buy menu at least once — not even cheaters. Managing economy is one of the most important skills you and the rest of your team can have in a game, and knowing just how much to buy for specific situations can save the entire team, not just in the current round, but for future rounds as well.

In CS2, half-buy rounds are usually when you have enough money, but at the same time, don’t want to spend it all in one go. To do this, either utility, rifles, or an extra piece of armor is sacrificed just so one’s in-game money counter doesn’t go all the way down. With other strategies like full eco rounds and full buy rounds, is it still ever worth it to opt for a half buy? The answer is yes.

CS2 Half Buy Rounds Earn Money

Every kind of player, from complete newcomers in competitive matchmaking to professionals at million-dollar LAN tournaments, has been told or called a half buy round at some point. They are the middle ground between save rounds and full buys, and have high upside for earning money as well.

Kill rewards for typical half-buy round weapons, such as SMGs or shotguns, are higher than those of rifles, so picking up even one or two kills in the process, despite losing overall, is still a positive contribution to the team’s economy.

Buying Armor Over Utility Sets

It’s not uncommon for a player or a team in a half buy situation to opt for full armor over any form of utility. Having extra padding on yourself while holding a modestly reliable weapon like a UMP-45 has gotten so many players their desired round outcomes despite using cheaper weapons.

Solid Anti-Eco Strategy

SMGs are a great option against an opposing team on an eco round due to their high fire rate, movement speed, and less movement inaccuracy. A team on an eco round may opt to play faster and craftier, something that has been shown to be effective against a typical methodical round played by a full buy team.

Fighting an eco round with a half buy still has its risks, but overall it’s still an effective way to pick up a nice result without spending all your money.
