Recoil control in Counter-Strike 2 is what sets it apart from most other FPS titles. While recoil exists in the majority of the shooters you can play on the market, CS has always done it quite differently. Recoil or spray pattern control is arguably the single most important fundamental of the game to get right, and even that’s an understatement.
Tapping your fire button to get individual shots off is good and widely used in certain situations, even. But sometimes, you just have to spray and pray. Thankfully, in CS2, recoil mastery is possible since each weapon in the game has its own designated recoil pattern, and mastery (or even just basic knowledge) of said patterns is all part of improving one’s shooting skills.
Recoil patterns (or spray patterns) are the predetermined bullet trajectory of each round in a full magazine once a weapon is fired. For example, the AK-47’s recoil pattern looks something like an inverted number seven. This means that when holding fire on a weapon, even if your first shot is accurate at head level, the bullets will go in different directions if the spray is not controlled.

Controlling the spray or recoil on different weapons refers to moving your crosshair in the opposite direction of where the bullets are going to go next, thus keeping them as centered as possible to the original aim position.
You can greatly improve your spray or recoil control in CS2 by making use of workshop training maps. Some were even created for the specific purpose of improving recoil control with various weapons, showing off their exact spray patterns and where you should be aiming to let your bullets stay compact.

Understanding other basics in CS2 is important as well. For example, there’s a high movement error when it comes to firing on the run. The less stable your character in-game is, the more inaccurate the shots will be. Working on your counter-strafing techniques to combat the movement inaccuracy is also another part of recoil practice that lots of players work on.
