Build The Best CS2 Team: Find a Reliable In-Game Leader

Let’s face it, not everybody is cut out to lead. That’s just the nature of life itself. But, of course, there will always be the select few who can take up the responsibility and execute their plans masterfully. Nothing will ever be more important in Counter-Strike than having an in-game leader to rally behind. They are the backbone of any and every team, and the greats are usually rewarded with trophy cabinets that anyone would be envious of.

The greatest team of all time, Astralis in 2018-2019, was captained by their in-game leader, Lukas “gla1ve” Rossander, who pioneered the notebook-style ultra-strategic approach to the game with utility usage that had previously never been seen before.

Finn “karrigan” Andersen, considered as the greatest IGL of all time for his longevity and prolonged success in the scene until the present day, is arguably the most vital part of the FaZe lineup with numerous mid-round and mid-game calls that have directly been the reason for his team’s success winning titles.

An in-game leader’s job is not just to tell the rest of the team where to go at the beginning of each round. “Rush B” or “Setup A” is the bare minimum of the IGL role. The in-game leader is responsible for ensuring the team knows what to do, why they have to execute in certain ways, and when the odds are stacked against them, to keep the spirits as high as possible and serve as a reminder never to lose hope.

Possible Secondary Role: AWPer

In-game leaders are not usually known for their aim, but that doesn’t mean they’re complete slouches on the scoreboard either. Some in-game leaders serve as secondary AWPers on the team when the primary sniper goes down. The two aforementioned IGLs have excelled in this role before, with Gla1ve even taking up the sniping responsibilities during a period where Astralis did not have a designated AWPer.

In conclusion, the difference between closing out victories and falling short typically depends on how strong your in-game leader is, especially in the higher levels of competition. Though casual play might see things happen a little differently, sometimes all you need to keep going despite a huge deficit is a leader who never gives up.
