What are CS2 Workshop Maps?
Workshop maps are one of many features of Counter-Strike that separate the game from traditional first-person shooters. A workshop map is a community-made map that players can download from the CS2 workshop on Steam and play by themselves or with friends. Unlike other games, which limit players to the maps created by developers, CS2 allows players to create their own custom maps and publish them so that any player can use them for themselves. An example of a workshop map can be anything from a simple aim training or 1v1 map to an advanced, uniquely coded hunger games replicate or a horror game entirely run within CS2.
Currently, 6,500 maps are on the official CS2 Workshop on Steam, and more are being added daily. Some maps are so well made and loved by players that they are added to the game as official maps. Anubis, for example, was initially a workshop map but gained so much popularity within the community that Valve purchased the rights to the map and made it a part of the active duty map pool for competitive play.
Now that you know what a workshop map is, let’s look at how to play workshop maps!
How to Download CS2 Workshop Maps
- Launch CS2
- Click Play
- Click “Workshop Maps”
- Navigate to the bottom left corner of the screen and select “Visit Workshop.” If you cannot launch CS2, you can also go to the workshop directly on the Steam website by clicking here.
- This will direct you to the official CS2 Workshop. Here, you can look through thousands of maps you can play in the game.
- To make your map search easier, there are tons of filtering options. On the right side of the screen, you can select which game modes you want to be able to play on the maps, and on the top, you can sort by the Most Popular, Most Recent, Last Updated, and Most Subscribed. You can also use the search bar on the top right of the workshop page to search for specific map types.
- Once you have found the map(s) you want to play, click on the map thumbnail to open up its workshop page. Directly underneath the photos of the map, you will see a “Subscribe to download” tab with a green Subscribe button. Hit Subscribe, and you will automatically be “subscribed to the map.”
- If you are already on CS2, the map will download in seconds. If not, as long as you are logged into Steam when subscribing to the map, the map will be automatically added to your map library. The next time you launch CS2, it will be downloaded to your game files, and you will be able to play it.
How to Play CS2 Workshop Maps
Now that the map is downloaded, it will appear in your “Workshop Maps” tab of the “Play” menu. Select the map, press Go, and select your desired game mode if prompted. To play with friends, have them join your lobby and start the game just as you would if you were alone. They will be prompted with a download and will automatically enter the game as soon as the download is completed.
