Most Impactful CS2 Pros: shroud
One of the pillars of North American CS was the iconic Cloud9 team in the mid-2010s, that were full of missed opportunities and performances that, while noteworthy, were never enough to put such a huge region on the map. For all of their shortcomings and struggles, it was still a big boost for the team and their fanbase as a whole that they had one of the best players NA had ever produced fighting for them event after event. That person was none other than Michael “shroud” Grzesiek.
What Makes shroud So Culturally Impactful in Counter-Strike?

Shroud’s presence and overall impact were widespread in the early days of CS:GO, not just in the competitive scene, but to casual gamers as well. Dubbed in the past as the “King of Reddit” for his high-IQ outplays and otherwise unbelievable natural talent for the game, shroud may very well just be one of the best gamers of all time based on mechanics alone.

His clips are full of precision as one of the best aimers both of his generation and of all time, alongside his very laid-back demeanor that directly contradicts a lot of the more notable players in CS. All of this rubbed off well with a specific fanbase, particularly those who are more active in social media, which gave shroud a huge following that has since carried on to his new career as a full-time streamer.

He was a leading name in North American Counter-Strike back in the day, especially during his time on Cloud9 alongside other pros from the region. Though shroud’s Cloud9 roster hardly ever found success at CS:GO Majors and only have one international LAN trophy to show for all their efforts, it was never the end result that made them special. It was the idea of hope, hope that a full-NA lineup could take on the world and go far in competitions where the general expectations were not for them to win anything.

Shroud’s likeable personality went a long way in the fanfare that Cloud9 gained, especially as a contrasting figure to the very expressive duo of Jordan ‘n0thing’ Gilbert and Ryan ‘freakazoid’ Abadir. His ability to aim with unmatched precision on the server gave the NA hopeful a lot to look forward to every single match, and in turn showed the rest of the world what North America was really made of.
That’s why we call shroud one of the best aimers of all time, because his movements with his arm are so accurate that not many people have that level of accuracy.

Nowadays, shroud has detached himself from Counter-Strike since his retirement from the game in 2018. But even with that, it’s hard to ignore exactly what kind of impact he had on the game and the community while he was an active player. He is one of the most well-known pros from that era of CS:GO, and until this day, his name is a familiar one when talking about the legacy and history of the NA region.
