CS2 added a variety of major changes in the latest update, the Rush Hour update, including a new game mode, tons of visual improvements, and completely game-changing features like silent reloads, but what has generated the most conversation in the CS2 scene is none other than the addition of pet chickens. This new feature has still not even been acknowledged by Valve, but now that the new CS2 chickens have been around for a week, we have a ton of information about how chickens work, how to get them, how to feed and care for them, and everything else that you could possibly need to know about CS2 chickens.

What are CS2 Chicken Pets?

Chickens have been a long-time staple of Counter-Strike. They wander around maps, have skins and stickers dedicated to them, and have essentially become the unofficial mascot of the Counter-Strike franchise. Now, CS2 has fully embraced its iconic animal mascot by adding a chicken pet system. Every player can now get their own pet chicken, starting with a chicken egg and growing through different stages. Chickens even have skins, accessories, and tons of animations, and can be brought into the game.

How to Get a Pet Chicken in CS2

Getting a pet chicken starts with a chicken egg. Chicken eggs drop in weekly care packages fairly often, and claiming an egg uses the equivalent of two items in the weekly drop, so if you claim the egg, you can’t get anything else from your care package.

Once you claim your egg, it will appear next to you on your lobby screen. You will also get a Hatchbook, which is used to document the life of your pet chicken with a built-in photo booth. After a week, the egg will hatch, producing a chick. The hatching process has three different possible animations. Now, you officially have a pet chick, but it’s not as simple as that. Now, you have to take care of your chicken as it grows from the baby chick stage to a full-grown hen.

CS2 Chicken Growth Stages

CS2 Chicken Growth Stages

CS2 aimed to make the pet chicken as realistic as possible, so it has real growth stages. First is the egg stage, which lasts around a week. Once the egg hatches, you have a chick, which lasts for 22 days. All chicks look identical during this stage, but you can name them, feed them, and use the Hatchbook to take pictures of your chick. After the chick stage ends, the pet chicken enters the pullet stage, which lasts about 28 days. This is the chicken’s adolescent stage, where the specific breed and color of the chicken is revealed. Once your pet chicken is a pullet, it can accompany you into matches.

Once the chicken grows out of the pullet stage, it finally reaches the hen stage, which is the chicken’s fully grown adult stage. The chicken remains a hen for around 90 days, making the hen stage the longest of all. Once the chicken is a hen, it unlocks all of the many chicken animations and poses.

How to Raise and Feed Your Pet Chicken

Like in real life, pet chickens in CS2 dont just grow on their own. You need to feed your chicken for it to progress to each new growth stage, and if you neglect the chicken by not feeding it, it will leave you. To feed your pet chicken, you will need chicken feed. You can get chicken feed in your weekly care packages, and like the chicken egg, claiming chicken feed replaces both weekly drop items, meaning you can’t get chicken feed and a skin or a case.

Do CS2 Chickens Die?

Yes, your pet chicken in CS2 will die. Even if you do feed your chicken every week, it will die regardless after a 140-day lifespan (after 90 days as a hen). When your pet chicken dies, it will leave a commemorative photo in your Hatchbook album.

What do CS2 Chickens Do in Matches?

Pet chickens are more than just decorations for your lobby and inventory. Once your chick grows into a pullet, you can bring it into CS2 matches with you, where it plays by your side. While it doesn’t actually affect how a match is played, the chicken has over 150 different animations for all kinds of situations, from getting kills to defusing the bomb, enhancing the CS2 experience in a fun and cute way.
